The liver is the body’s primary organ for detoxification (Mahboubi & Mahboubi, 2020). It continuously processes and eliminates toxins, such as alcohol, medication, and environmental pollutants, which enter the body through food, air, and skin (Dolce & Della Torre, 2023). The liver is also essential for proper immune function, regulating the metabolism of fats, proteins, and glucose, balancing blood volume, and managing other processes vital for overall health (Trefts et al., 2017).
Exposure to harmful substances like organic chemicals and pollutants, along with being overweight, having imbalanced gut bacteria, and certain lifestyle and genetic influences, can increase oxidative stress in the liver and cause damage over time (Dolce & Della Torre, 2023). Milk thistle, turmeric, dandelion, and artichoke are used in herbal medicine for supporting liver health.
Milk thistle has been used medicinally for approximately 2,000 years. Its active compounds, known collectively as silymarin, are antioxidants that help scavenge free radicals, protect liver cell membranes, and enhance the production of the endogenous antioxidant glutathione in the liver (Gillessen & Schmidt et al., 2020).
Milk thistle extracts standardized to silymarin are used in herbal medicine to help patients with various liver conditions. A review of 26 randomized, controlled trials involving 2,375 patients with liver fat accumulation found that supplementing with silymarin for 12–24 weeks significantly improved liver health. Silymarin significantly improved signs of liver health, measured as reduced blood levels of the enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), reduced the accumulation of fat in liver cells, and decreased fatty liver index scores (Li et al., 2024).
Milk thistle is recognized for its liver-detoxifying properties. In a fourweek, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial, lung patients who supplemented with 140 mg of silymarin three times daily alongside their standard medication reduced their risk of drug-induced liver damage by 28% compared with the placebo group (Luangchosiri et al., 2015).
Turmeric root contains active antioxidant compounds called curcuminoids, such as curcumin. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 31 studies found that participants in varying states of health who supplemented with turmeric/curcumin for up to 24 weeks reduced their blood levels of the liver enzymes ALT and AST, indicating improved liver health (Dehzad et al., 2023).
Dandelion is commonly used for liver health in various types of traditional medicine. For example, in Ayurveda, dandelion is recommended for various liver and gallbladder disorders. It is also used as a liver tonic in Chinese, Indian, and Russian folk medicines. In addition to having a nourishing profile of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and phytosterols, dandelion root contains the fibre inulin, which contributes to its liver supportive properties. Preclinical studies show that dandelion root supports liver health and function through the prebiotic effect of its inulin fraction in the gut and by influencing how the body processes fats (Mahboubi & Mahboubi, 2020).
Artichoke leaves are used in traditional medicine for conditions affecting the liver and biliary systems (Rezazadeh et al., 2018). In addition to its rich nutritional profile, artichokes contain antioxidant flavonoids that help combat oxidative stress and enhance glutathione peroxidase activity in the liver (El Sayed et al., 2018).
