Licorice root (Latin: Glycyrrhiza glabra) is also commonly known as liquorice or sweet root. Despite being similar in taste to anise and fennel, botanically it is not closely related to either of those plants. The flavor profile is so similar though, that many licorice flavored foods and beverages contain anise rather than licorice. Everyone is familiar with licorice sweets, but decades ago it was common for people to sell dried sticks of licorice root to be chewed on as candy itself or as a quick mouth freshener.
Licorice has a long history of use in traditional medicine in ancient Assyrian, Egyptian, Chinese, and Indian cultures where it has been used to smooth upset stomach, reduce inflammation, and treat upper respiratory symptoms. Today, many people use licorice as an herbal home-remedy to help with heartburn and acid-reflux as well as cold and flu symptoms like a cough or sore throat. Licorice root is promoted as a dietary supplement for conditions such as digestive problems, menopausal symptoms, and bacterial and viral infections.
