INFORMATION:
Native to southern Africa, Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum), also known as grapple plant or wood spider, gets its name from the tiny hooks that cover its fruit. This devil's claw root is wild grown, sustainably harvested, and coarse chopped for use as an herbal tea.

Historically, people have used devil's claw as a remedy for muscle pains, arthritis, and various skin conditions. There is currently not enough scientific evidence to support health claims for devil's claw, but people commonly add it into their diets to help with a range of inflammatory and pain conditions. This herb contains iridoid glycosides, which are compounds that may have anti-inflammatory effects. The root contains a high concentration of one type of iridoid called harpagoside, and some studies suggest it may relieve pain and inflammation. Research continues to be conducted to see if devil’s claw helps with arthritis, back pain, migraines, and gout. Some herbalists promote this root for treatment in upset stomach, headaches, and menstrual cramps; certain people prefer to take devil’s claw for pain relief instead of NSAIDs.

This devil's root is a fascinating herbal with potential wellness properties. It is best blended with sweeter herbs and fruits to balance its bitter and deeply elemental flavor. The subtle woody aroma and astringent finish create a unique flavor profile that blends well with other herbals. If you want to drink it on its own, we recommend adding your favorite natural sweetener to the brew.
