INFORMATION:
If you lived through the depression, you would very likely have been familiar with chicory, and chicory coffee. While the origin of chicory's use as a coffee substitute isn't definitely known, it is believed to have first been used in place of coffee during a previous coffee shortage in 1800's France, when coffee lovers mixed chopped chicory root into coffee to help them get their morning fix.
Perhaps because of the city's French heritage, during the Civil War chicory coffee also rose in popularity in New Orleans. There, chicory stood in for coffee after the city's supply was cut short by Union blockades of the city's port. Finally, as mentioned above, chicory coffee took off again as a less expensive coffee substitute during the Depression, when dust and despair drained the nation's coffers, putting coffee out of reach for many.
Now, even though we're a tea company, we can admit that a coffee shortage is depressing. Which is why we'll leave you with a poem, 'A Roadside Near Ithaca' by American poet William Matthews (1942-1997), in which he describes the loveliness of chicory in bloom. He writes:
Now everything's in bloom along the road at once:
tansy mustard, sow thistle, fescue, burdock, soapwort, the mailbox-high day lilies,
splurges of chicory with thin, ragged, sky-blue flowers.
